Arthritis Definitions

Gout is a result of high levels of uric acid found in the human bloodstream. Crystals form and deposit themselves on joints, tendons and related tissue the result of which can be an attack of acute arthritis – a painful condition which often leads to chronic gouty arthritis.

Pseudo gout is a term used to describe acute synovitis which results in red, tender, and swollen joints. This can often resemble a similar condition known as gouty arthritis. It is caused by the formation of rhomboid crystals of calcium pyrophosphate

Arthritis is a group of conditions which damage body joints:

- Juvenile arthritis is arthritis of the joints in children under 16 years of age.
- Septic arthritis is caused by infection of the joint or joints.
- Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis were the body attacks itself as opposed to foreign external attack.
- Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age.
- Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint, causing inflammation.
- Psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself.

Arthritis Drugs:

- Celebrex (Celecoxib) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, acute pain, etc.

- Vioxx (Rofecoxib) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has now been withdrawn over safety concerns. It was marketed by Merck & Co. to treat osteoarthritis, acute pain conditions, and dysmenorrhoea.

- Bextra (Valdecoxib) is a prescription drug used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and painful menstruation and menstrual symptoms. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, but has been withdrawn from sale since 2005 due to safety concerns.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar. In the US it is one of the most commonly used non-vitamin, non-mineral, natural products used by adults as a complementary or alternative medicine.

Chondroitin sulfate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composed of a chain of alternating sugars (N-acetylgalactosamine and glucuronic acid). Along with glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate has become a widely used dietary supplement for treatment of osteoarthritis.

Ankylosing spondylitis, previously known as Bechterew’s disease, Bechterew syndrome, and Marie Strümpell disease, is a form of Spondyloarthritis, a chronic, inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune disease. It mainly affects joints in the spine and in the pelvis, causing eventual fusion of the spine. Complete fusion results in a complete rigidity of the spine, a condition known as bamboo spine.

Joint Pain is a commonly used description for the more technical term of arthritis.
