Gout – without doubt one of the most painful types of Arthritis – is often difficult to manage on a day to day basis. Milk is known to have an effect on the levels of concentration of uric acid in the body – the acid most implicated in developing gout. The American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting this week announced the results of a study which sought to assess the effect of skim milk on serum uric acid concentrations. The risk of gout is increased with elevated levels of uric acid in the body. They discovered a marked difference between various types of skim milk and that of soy milk. The implications of increasing milk intake for gout sufferers are well defined in this study. You can read the full report here.

Given the world-wide interest in magnets and copper bracelets as a means of relieving or eliminating arthritis pain, a placebo-controlled study by a research fellow at the University of York, UK has provided strong evidence that copper bracelets and magnets are ineffective for relieving arthritis pain.

The study involved more than 50 participants who were all osteoarthritis sufferers and measured the effect of these devices on participants pain, stiffness and physical function. The concluding opinion is that any perceived benefit is attributed to psychological placebo effects and that people should be very careful about how much money they spend on purchasing magnetic bracelets and copper bracelets.
