Canadian scientists believe they may have found a promising target for developing new osteoarthritis treatments. Researchers at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children were investigating the role of a group of proteins called ‘Hedgehog’ in pediatric cartilage tumors, when they happened to make an interesting observation. The team noticed that mice in which Hedgehog proteins were activated tended to develop osteoarthritis.

Dr. C. Kent Kwoh, professor of medicine and epidemiology in the university’s division of rheumatology and clinical immunology studied 201 people over 24 weeks. Adults who suffered abuse as children have 56% higher odds of contracting osteoarthritis. Researchers where astonished at how, even after accounting for other conditions that could have skewed the research results, that the relationship between osteo arthritis and child abuse was still significant.
